Windows 8 : Search Anything within a Right click

Have you ever imagined what would happen if the search option is found missing on your computer? There are numerous files residing on your computer. Looking for a file under Windows can be hectic if you go on searching for a particular file one by one. Searching for a item through each and every folders not only wastes your valuable time but also makes you irritating. To make search easier on your computer, Windows have inbuilt search option in the OS. Search option makes the search easier and faster on your Windows computer. Here is the tutorial how you can add search option to your context menu or in the right click menu.

Search is a must-have feature for any operating system. You all must know about the recent changes on the Windows 8. The Start Menu is replaced by metro start screen. Likewise, the search has been shifted to Charms Bar. It can be brought on the screen by pressing Windows Key + Q. Many new users are not able to locate the charms bar and even think that search option is missing on the Windows 8 OS. But, it would be easier if you can add the search option in the context menu of their current directory.

Follow the tutorial to add the search option to context menu at different locations of your Windows PC using Registry Editor

Add Search to Context Menu or Right-Click Menu

  • Open RUN dialog box by going under the start menu or by holding Windows Key + R combination on the keyboard
  • Type Regedt32.exe in Run dialog box and hit OK. This will open Windows registry
  • Now, Navigate to following location HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CABFolder\shell\find

  • To the right pane of this location, create a string with Value Name as Icon and put its Value Data equals to imageres.dll,-177. Also ensure that there must have 32-bit value for SuppresionPolicy is 80.
  • Repeat the above process by going on to the following locations too.
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\shell\Search
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Search
  • Next scroll to this location HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\shell\Search\command
  • In case you didn’t found HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\shell\Search\command, then go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\shell\Search and create a subkey as command.

Add desktop options using regedit

  • Now, edit the Default string with Value Data as explorer.exe search-ms: by going to the right pane of this lo9cation
  • Repeat the above step for this location also HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Search\command

Upon completion of the above process, close the windows and go to Windows explorer. Right click anywhere and you will find the search option in the context menu or the right click menu in any directory.

The steps described above will allow you to add the search option in the context menu that will make the searching more easily on your computer or say search anything with a click.
