Start screen pins items that are both default and non-default Apps. This tutorial will show you how to reset your Start screen in Windows 8 back to default ones i.e. screen pinned with only default Store apps.
Keep in mind that,
Upon Resetting, OS automatically unpins all non-default pinned items from your Start screen leaving only the pinned default Store apps. Upon unpinning default Store apps, they won’t be added back. But, any other Store apps installed (non-default), and then they will be unpinned.
On choosing Restore, it restores all of your Start screen pinned items exactly to how they were when last reset.
You can find all your pinned Start items that are saved by default in the files at the following hidden folder locations
In this tutorial we will be renaming these files and folders to back up before deleting to reset, and to restore for you automatically using a BAT file.
Steps to Reset Start Screen in Windows 8
- Firstly we need to create a .bat file. To do so, you need to open notepad and copy the following entries
ren “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms” “appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bk1″
ren “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak” “appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak.bk2″
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
- Now save the note file with a name start explorer. Make sure to keep the extension as .bat
- Next, Run the file, Upon prompted click on Run.
- The screen starts flickering with the restart of explorer.
Upon completing the steps you will see that your start screen has been reset.
Steps to Restore Start Screen in Windows 8
This option works only when you want to restore your Start screen after resetting it.
- Again, we need to create a .bat file, so open notepad, copy and paste the following entries
del /F /S /Q /A “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms”
del /F /S /Q /A “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak”
ren “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bk1″ “appsFolder.itemdata-ms”
ren “%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak.bk2″ “appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak”
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
- Save the file by naming it as Restore Start screen with .bat extension
- Now, run the file
- Upon applying the changes, screen flickers with the restart of explorer.
Now you are back with the start screen as it was before resetting it.
You will also come to find that any previously still pinned default Store apps that came included with Windows 8 remain after resetting your Start screen.
