Windows 8: Remove & Reset Jump List on Windows 8 Taskbar

Jump lists are the shortcuts that can be used in Windows to access frequently visited or opened items, files, folders or pinned items by a simple right click on a program’s icon on the system taskbar. Windows saves all the Jump Lists and pinned items, recent items, and frequent places in the following folder locations

shell:Recent\AutomaticDestinations

Shell:Recent\CustomDestinations

You can delete to reset and clear your Jump Lists from these locations automatically using a BAT file.

Steps to Remove a Specific Item in a Jump List on Windows 8 Taskbar

  • Right click on the taskbar or hold on an app icon to open the jump list
  • In the jump list, right click on an unpinned item that you want to remove, and select the Remove option from the list

You can follow the same steps to remove any items from the jump lists.

Steps to Reset and Clear All Jump Lists Automatically with a .BAT File

You need to create a .bat file to achieve this, follow the steps below

  • Open notepad and copy the following entries

del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*

del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\*

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

start explorer.exe

  • Now save the file as Reset_and_Clear_Jump_Lists.bat with .bat extension
  • Now, Run the newly created .bat file

You will notice that your screen flickers as the BAT file runs and restarts explorer. After that you can see that the jump lists reset and cleared.
