Windows 8: Disable/Turn off User Auto Login

As been discussing about the changes made in Windows 8, here is another feature called User Auto Login. This feature was not available in the earlier version of Windows OS. This feature allows you to access the account that was last logged in. When you or the other user on your system who have last used the system moves out and you turn on the system, you are login to the account that was last accessed on the system automatically. Here is the tutorial to Prevent User Auto Login in Windows 8.

disable windows 8 user auto login

When you log in to your system, you are logged to the user account that was previously opened. To prevent the auto login feature in Windows 8, you can set password to each user account on your Windows 8 system. But, if any of the users doesn’t like or not used to the habit of not remembering the password, then here is how you can prevent or disable auto login or auto sign in feature in Windows 8.

This auto sign in or auto login feature in Windows 8 is governed by a DWORD called “Enabled” in the Windows registry at the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\UserSwitch

set enabled 1 registry

With the “Enabled” parameter set to 1, you are able to see the logon screen or the list of users instead of auto signing in the last used account. But, the LogonUI.exe process auto resets the “Enabled” value back to zero once the system restarts i.e. at every startup.

Here is an alternate way to change the registry “Enabled” value back to 1 before each logon. To achieve this follow the steps given below.

Press Windows key + R and open Run box and type in netplwiz and hit Enter

You see a new window on the screen, here check the option Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer

user account enter user name

Again, open Run box and type in gpedit.msc and hit enter to open Local Group Policy Editor Window

In the left-pane of policy editor window, navigate to User Configuration and expand the folder called Windows Settings and click on Scripts (Logon/Logoff)

In the immediate right pane, double click on Logoff option and select the Add button

Now, enter C:\Windows\System32\reg.exe as script name and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\UserSwitch /v Enabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f as script parameters

Click on OK button to save the scripts.

This newly created script will set the Registry DWORD “Enabled” value to 1 and also sets or run the script every time a user logs off PC. So, whenever any user logins the system might see the logon screen with the list of all users.

You can also use a third party portable tool called User List Enabler, if don’t have sound knowledge on editing commands or find this method tricky or messy. This tool can enable or disable the auto-login behavior of Windows 8 within a click.

You can now prevent login to other user account while starting your PC, either using the registry tweak or by using a third party portable tool called User List Enabler.
