Windows 8: Disable Lock Screen

Are you among them who don’t like the new features of lock screen on Windows 8? Here is the tutorial how you can disable the lock screen on your Windows 8 computer. Lock screen feature is simply useless for the laptop or computer users. This feature is useful in Tabs rather than on desktops and moreover you need an extra step to unlock the locked PC. For those who don’t want to waste time on unlocking the lock screen, then follow the tutorial to disable the feature on your PC.

Windows 8 by default doesn’t provide any option to disable lock screen. There are two methods to disable or turn off the new lock screen on Windows 8. The first one is from the Group Policy Editor and other one is from the registry editor.

Using Windows Local Group Policy Editor

To disable the lock screen feature on Windows 8 with Local Group Policy Editor, follow the steps given below.

  • Open Run dialog box by pressing WIN+R key combination
  • Type gpedit.msc in the Run box and hit Enter. This will open Local Group Policy Editor
  • Next go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization

  • Double-click on Do not display the lock screen option on the right side of the windows and set its value to Enabled

Upon completion of the above steps you can disable or turn off lock screen feature in Windows 8. Again, if you want to enable lock screen again, follow the same procedures and set the value to Not configured.

Using Windows Registry Editor

The alternate way to disable or turn off the lock screen feature is through Windows Registry Editor. Follow the steps to do so.

  • Open Run dialog box by holding the WIN+R key combination
    Type regedit and hit Enter. This will open Registry Editor
    Now navigate to the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization

  • If the key doesn’t exist, then you need to create it manually.
  • Next, select Personalization key and in right-side pane, and create a new DWORD NoLockScreen and set its value to 1
  • Now, close the Registry Editor and restart Windows to apply the changes.

Upon logging on you will find that the lock screen is turned off in the windows 8 OS. If you again want to restore lock screen back, just delete the DWORD or set its value to 0.

But, before doing any changes in the Windows registry you need to create a restore point on your system. As deletion of any important entry can create errors and lead several other problems on your computer.

Upon following the steps above you can easily create disable or turn off the lock screen on your Windows 8 PC.
