Windows 8 – Allow or Prevent Users from Uninstalling Windows Store Apps

Windows 8 comes with in-built installed App store. First of all make sure that you are signed in as an administrator in order to apply the changes. Here we will be discussing about the method of deleting or removing Uninstall button from option bar that appears when you right click on a Windows Store app on either the Start or Apps screen.

Create and Use BAT (.bat)File

By using this procedure or .bat file all users on the computer will be affected.

Allow Users to Uninstall Apps

  • Firstly, you need to create .bat file. To do so, Open Notepad and copy and paste the following entries

REG Delete HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer /V NoUninstallFromStart /F
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

  • Now, save the note file by naming it Allow Uninstalling Metro Apps and with .bat extension in desktop
  • Right click and select Run as administrator to merge the entry into the registry
  • Upon prompted by UAC, click on Run and Yes

You will notice that your explorer flashes as explorer gets restarted to apply the registry changes. This will enable users to Uninstall Windows Store App. However, this is a default setting.

To Prevent All Users from Uninstalling Windows Store Apps, follow the steps given below

  • Open Notepad again and copy and paste the following entries

REG Add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer /V NoUninstallFromStart /T REG_DWORD /D 00000001 /F
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe

  • Now, save and name it as Prevent Uninstalling Metro Apps with .bat extension and follow the same process as mentioned above.
