The auto suggest is useful when you want to search for a item that you have searched earlier, so as soon as type any item on any search queries in File Explorer or charms bar you can see suggestion pop-ups, which are based upon your past searches into the Search Box. Follow the steps here to remove or delete recent search or auto suggest entries or reset the Search Box in File Explorer in Windows 8.

Reset or Delete Specific Search “Auto Suggest” Entries in File Explorer

  • Go to Windows 8 file Explorer
  • In the Search box on the upper right corner of the file explorer window, click it

  • As soon as you click the search box, you can see the suggestions pop up. To remove them simply select the search suggestion and hit the Delete key on keyboard
  • Repeat the same process to delete as many entries as you want so that you will no longer see any search available in the search history.

Steps to Reset and Clear All Search “Auto Suggest” Entries in Windows 8 File Explorer

  • To reset Search box, we need to create a batch file. To create a .bat file, open notepad and copy paste the following entries

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

REG Delete “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WordWheelQuery” /F

  • Next, save the file with a name Clear Search History in File Explorer with a .bat extension
  • Now, run the file by double clicking on it.
  • Upon prompted by UAC/RUN, click Run/yes
  • This will merge the created .bat file entries into your system registry.

Restart your File Explorer and click on the search box, you will no longer find any search Auto suggest history or say all the past searches are cleared.
