The new Windows 8 operating system is quite different from the previous version of OS. Many variations can be seen in this OS which was absent or different in the previous version of OS. Likewise, many features are missing from the OS or say replaced by other features. You might have known that Microsoft has removed the start menu with start screen. Windows keeps track of documents or programs that are frequently or recently visited or opened in a Recent Items list on the Start menu. The new Windows 8 doesn’t avail this feature. There are many users who want to maintain the privacy and don’t let anyone to know anything of their recent activities on your system. While there are users who want to keep their recent activities to be tracked so that they can access them easily. In Windows 8 Recent Items list are available on the desktop mode. The Run dialog box also stores a most recently used (MRU) list of commands you had run.
The recent documents menu may have disappeared from Windows 8, but the Jump Lists are still available. In order to access them you need to pin your favorite programs on the task bar. Upon pinning the programs, right click on the pinned icon and you will be able to see a list of recent files accessed by that program. This way you get program specific recent documents menu. The size of Jump list can be maximized and minimized. You can go to taskbar properties to view or change the settings of the jump list. Click on the taskbar and select Properties from the options menu. Click on the Jump List tab and adjust your settings according to your preferences.
If you don’t want to use the jump list to access the recent documents, then there is an alternate way to get into the recent menu. The recent documents menu are though present in Windows 8, but you need to access them.
Press Win+R to open the Run dialog box. Type in recent and press enter. On hitting on enter you will be directed to the location C:/Users/Recent in Explorer and this is where you will be able to see all your recent activities such as documents. Programs, files and folders accessed, URLs opened and programs launched along with the Metro apps. This list keeps the track of every recent activity on your computer. This list is long so you have to sort the programs to make it easier to access. You can either group them either by type or date.
To access the recent documents list easily, just by simply pinning the folder to the Windows 8 start screen. To achieve this, open Explorer and click on the down arrow on the extreme right to expand the ribbon menu. Now, click on Options. In the Options window, click on the View tab and uncheck the box that says Hide protected operating system files. Then open the folder C:/users/in Explorer. Right click on the shortcut to Recent and choose Pin to start from the menu. By doing this you can add a recent tile to your Windows 8 start screen. You can customize the tiles further using Olbytiles.
Make sure to slip back to the explorer and make changes under Options window that is to make protected operating system files hidden again to prevent any awkward incident.
