Follow the steps described below to add restart context menu in Windows 8 PC
Before moving on to the steps to add restart option, make sure that you are logged in the PC with Admin privelege

Add Restart to Windows 8 Desktop Context Menu

You need to create a .reg file to achieve the purpose.

  • Open notepad and copy paste the following entries given below

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Restart Computer]
“icon”=”shell32.dll,-290″
“Position”=”Bottom”
@=”shutdown.exe -r -t 00 -f”

  • Next, save the file with a name Add_Restart_to_Desktop_Context_Menu with a .reg extension on the desktop
  • Close the file and double click to run the file
  • Upon prompted by UAC, click yes to proceed
  • Now, right click on desktop and you can see the restart button added to the context menu.
  • [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Restart Computer\command]

Remove Restart from the Desktop Context Menu

  • Again you need to create a .reg file, so open notepad and copy paste the following entries given below

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Restart Computer]

Save the file to the desktop with a name Remove_Restart_from_Desktop_Context_Menu.reg

  • Click to Run, and hit Yes upon prompted by UAC and the entry get merge with the Windows registry.

You can delete the created .reg file once you have merged the file

Upon following the steps described here, you can right click on your desktop to see the change. If the system asks for a restart, do so to apply the changes.

You can press the Windows + D key to get to the Windows 8 desktop.
