Windows 8 OS comes with many features that are also embedded or say mirrored in other features like the metro start screen on Windows 8 can also be seen in IE 10 browser. Likewise, you must have seen the eye sign mark on the password box w3hile using Gmail account or at sign-in tile. This feature is there to reveal your password or say allows you to see your password as soon as you type in the password box. This feature comes in handy to those who have the habit of typing the password wrong or doesn’t like the star or dots on typing the password. IE 10 is the default browser on Windows 8. Though the eye has its own importance and can be important to other user but at the same time there is risk involved in revealing the password as your privacy might be on stake.

Steps to Disable Reveal Password Eye in IE 10

  • Open Run dialog using Windows key + R and type in gpedit.msc and hit Enter. This will open the Group policy editor
  • Now, navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Credential User Interface

  • In the right pane of Credential User Interface, look for Do not display the password reveal button and double click on it.
  • This opens properties window, select the radio button for enabled. This will hide the password reveal button in IE

  • Finally, click OK button and update policy editor or restart Windows to apply the changes.

On restart you can launch IE and open Gmail login page or your account sign-in page, you will no longer find the eye button in the password box.

But before you start following the steps above, make sure you are logged in as Admin and created a restore point. As only windows 8 pro avails Group Policy the procedure is valid to this version only.
