Fix – USB drive working, but doesn’t show on Windows 8 computer

On plugging your USB device you see no USB device on the Computer explorer. This can be quite irritating when a working USB doesn’t show up on the computer. USB are more widely used to transfer data from one system to other. But what if doesn’t show up on the computer then it becomes completely useless. However there can be several reasons causing this issue. In this tutorial we will be discussing about how to fix this issue to show the USB on the explorer.

  • Check the USB device. If it turns out to be faulty one, then it can be the reason for the problem. If not then you can go for other steps below.
  • Make sure USB port access is not disabled or blocked. If so then you might not see the USB device or say it won’t be detected. However, USB port is blocked by users to prevent or block malware entry or data theft. To do so, follow the steps below
  • Press Win + C and in the search charm type in Device Manager
  • Open Device Manager from the results in left pane

  • Next, click on Universal Bus controllers and right click on all the Host controllers and enable them
  • This can also be enabled using Registry Editor.
  • Open RUN dialog using Windows + R and type in regedit and hit enter
  • In registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR
  • In the right pane of UBSTOR, select Start and change its value
  • To enable USB port assign it to 3 instead of 4
  • Close Registry.
  • Go to Computer Management and there the drives for USB is showed then proceed to the next step.
  • Open control Panel > All Control Panel items > Folder option
  • Click on the View Tab

  • Here Uncheck the option Hide Empty Drives in the Computer folder.

That’s all. You can now see USB on the explorer. Un-Plug USB and Restart your system. Insert it again you can find the USB on the explorer.
