Enable or Disable Store On Windows To Go Workspaces In Windows 8

Already mentioned in the earlier post, Microsoft Windows 8 has built new features, one of them is Windows To Go. This feature allows Windows 8 to boot and run from any external hardware or mass storage devices such as USB flash drives and external hard disk drives. Here is the tutorial about how you can enable or disable Store on Windows To Go Workspace Windows 8.

Enable disable Store Windows To Go Workspaces

Windows To Go is proposed to allow enterprise administrators to present an imaged version of Windows 8 to its users  that reflects on commercial desktop. Creation of Windows To Go drives is not supported by other Windows 8 editions.  To allow or deny Windows Store to install apps in Windows To Go workspace, while you are running on Windows 7 or Windows 8 host computer, follow the steps given below.

Using Local Group Policy

  • Launch run dialog box by pressing Win+R key from your keyboard.
  • Type gpedit.msc and hit Enter on your keyboard.
  • Upon prompted by UAC, press Yes.
  • Under Local Group Policy editor, follow the path Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store in the left pane

Store Enable Window To Go

  • In the right pane, double-click on the value Allow Store to install apps on Windows To Go workspaces
  • When a new window opens up, select Enable or Disable option present at the left side of the window.

Once you have selected the option you want to have that is either enable or disable, click OK to save your changes and close Local Group Policy Group window.

Using .Reg file

Upon booting into the Windows To Go workspace USB flash drive, follow the steps below.

The following process must be done in the Windows To Go workspace. This won’t work if done in the Windows 7 or Windows 8 host pc.

To Disable Access to Windows Store on the Windows To Go Workspace

  • Open notepad and copy the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore]“EnableWindowsStoreOnWTG”=-
  • Save the file in .reg format

To Enable Access to Windows Store on the Windows To Go Workspace

  • Open notepad and copy the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore]“EnableWindowsStoreOnWTG”=dword:00000001
  • Save the file in .reg format
  • Save the .reg file to your desktop.
  • Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to Merge it
  • Upon prompted by UAC click Yes, Yes, and OK.

Once completed with the process you can delete the .reg file if you don’t want to keep it. Upon following the above process you can enable or disable store on windows To Go Workspace in Windows 8.
