Disable auto download of Windows Store Apps updates

Windows 8 comes with inbuilt Store Apps, which allows user to install different Apps in the system. Whenever there is an update available for the downloaded Store App, Windows 8 allows auto update. This is set by default, Windows 8 will automatically start downloading and installing that update. This feature reduces manual effort that is you don’t have to manual update the Apps. But this feature can be annoying to those who use limited internet data plan as the update can increases Band-width usage. Follow the steps given below to disable automatic download of app updates in Windows 8. Before moving on to the steps make sure that you are logged in the Windows 8 with administrator privilege.

Steps to disable automatic download of Windows Store application updates

  • Hold down Windows Key + R to open Run dialog
  • Type in gpedit.msc and press Enter. Upon prompted by User Account Control (UAC), click on Yes to proceed
  • When you are at the Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Store
  • In the immediate right-pane, select Turn off Automatic Download of updates entry and double click on it
  • Now, you see a new window, here in order to disable automatic download of Windows Store application Updates check the buttons to Enabled and hit OK.

Once you have completed all the steps described above, the auto update feature gets disabled, but this process doesn’t fully disable your Windows App Update feature. The only change made is that the updates are no longer updated automatically. You get to see all the updates available and you need to manually update it whenever you wish to for your installed Windows apps (Metro Apps).

To re-enable auto update feature, simply set the radio button to Disable or Not Configured option.

Upon following the steps described above you can disable the automatic update for the Apps that are installed from Windows 8 store.
