Create & Add Control Panel Tile to Windows 8 Metro Start Screen

The latest feature added to the new Windows 8 OS is the metro start screen with live tiles. It is the replacement over traditional start menu. However, the new start screen allows you to launch programs from the live tiles by a click on it. But, you might have noticed that the Control Panel tile missing from start screen or say no tile for control panel in the metro start screen. Here is the tutorial how you can add control panel tile to your Windows 8 start screen.

However, there are several ways of launching control panel in Windows 8 apart from the live tiles that is from the Charm bar, accessing by the Administrative menu, and using traditional ways. If you want to launch control panel from the start screen itself, then you need to create and add a control panel. Follow the steps below to add a Control Panel shortcut or tile to the Start screen.

Create Control Panel Tile on the Start Screen

First we need to create a shortcut for Control Panel that can be pinned anywhere in the Start screen. Once you create a shortcut in a folder it can be pinned into the Start screen

  • Next, navigate to the location where you want to place your shortcut. For example, If you have created the Control Panel shortcut on the desktop, right click on the empty space on the screen and select New > Shortcut
  • In the Create Shortcut window, enter the following location into the box %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}

  • Click on Next button and name it and then hit Finish
  • Now you will be having a new shortcut in the desktop with a Libraries icon. You need to change the icon to the Control Panel icon. To do so, right click on the shortcut and select Properties
  • Under Properties window, click Change icon button

  • In the new window that appears next, enter the following %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
  • Next, find the Control Panel icon and select it then hit OK
  • On the screen you can see the shortcut named as Control Panel with correct icon. Next, you have to pin the newly created shortcut to the Start screen, simply right click on the shortcut and choose Pin the Start.

Upon completion of all the steps you can notice that there is a tile of Control Panel on your Start screen. So, now you can launch the control panel from the Windows 8 start screen.
