Adding Control Panel to Windows 8 Start menu

Microsoft has brought out many changes in Windows 8 OS that are attracting a lot of users. But the users are also missing the start menu which was used to search items on the system in the previous versions. Windows 8 also includes two types of Control Panels. Firstly, the Standard or Desktop Control Panel and second one the Windows 8 Control Panel. The Standard Control Panel is similar to that which we see in the earlier versions of Windows like Windows 7 or Vista. While, Windows 8 Control Panel which was previously known as Metro Control Panel in the preview versions of Windows 8 that includes only includes some general settings to handle Windows 8 UI. As all the settings are still missing from the control panel you need to add old Control Panel to Windows 8 Start menu to search it more easily. As already mentioned above, all settings and options are not availed in new Windows 8 Control Panel. Here is how you can add old Control Panel to access other settings options.

Procedures to Add old Control Panel to Windows 8 Start menu

Procedure 1:

  • Open Windows 8 Charms bar by moving mouse in the right side of the screen or by pressing Windows + C keys
  • Next, select Search and type in Control Panel
  • In the result that appears, right-click on the Control Panel

  • Next, select Pin to Start option, that appears at the bottom of the page.

Procedure 2:

  • Go to Windows 8 desktop mode and right click on it. From the Context Menu select New > Shortcut

  • This opens a window where you need to type the location address of the file for which you are creating the shortcut i.e. %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} and hit Next

  • Assign a name Control panel and click to proceed then Finish.

Upon completion of the entire steps described above, you can see that the shortcut has been added to the desktop. Now all you need to do is pin it to the start menu. To do so, right-click on Control Panel Shortcut file and from the Context Menu that appears select Pin to Start option.

Now, you have a Control panel icon added to your Windows 8 home screen.
