The old Windows 7 styled Start menu is user friendly to get through whereas the new Metro start screen is little difficult to get through for the newbie’s. There is a way how you can access the access the old start screen in the Windows 8 or keep both the start menu and Metro interface at the same time by using software called Classic Shell. It is freeware that brings back the classic or the basic windows feature in the Windows 8. For example, classic Start Menu, start button, standard toolbar buttons in Windows Explorer, etc. This software has been updated and now it features the method to skip the metro start screen. It brings back the old start menu but doesn’t remove Metro, so you can have both at the same time.

Upon installing Classic Shell it by default gets you to the classic start menu which can be changed to the Windows 7 styled menu, by selecting the Two column option under Classic Shell Settings.

In order to get into the Metro start screen, get the mouse pointer to the bottom corner of the start button. However, it’s possible to get both the menus up at the same time. You can access any Metro apps from the metro screen. But, when you hit the windows button on your keyboard it would take you back to the classic menu rather than metro start screen. This issue can be solved configuring the Windows key to show the Windows Start menu.
