USB Devices not detected on Windows PC – How to fix it?

Many users out there must have come across errors with detection of USB devices like Pen drives, memory cards, etc. When you connect any USB devices to your system, windows failed to detect them. However, this is one of the most common problems these days. In this tutorial we will be discussing about the possible fixes to detect Pen drive, USB drive in your PC.

On connecting your USB devices to USB port you might come across issues with either USB devices not detected or device detected but not appear in the drive list.

But before jumping into any conclusion regarding the problem, firstly make sure that the USB or removable devices are working properly by connecting it to some other computer
If the USB drive is perfectly fine, then follow the steps described below.

  • Go to start orb (for Windows 7) or search Charm and open RUN Or you can use the hotkey Windows key + R
  • Next, type in type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. This will open the system device manager
  • Navigate to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
  • Here you can see a list of devices, look for your USB device i.e. connected to system and appear as USB Mass Storage Device

  • Now, right click on the drivers and either update them or uninstall and reinstall them back.

After trying out the steps you can find that Windows detects your USB devices.

If the USB drive is turned out to be the faulty one then replacement is must as it cannot be accessed.

Steps to Fix USB drive detected, but not displayed in the drive list

You connect your USB drive, Windows detects it but it is not listed under drives. You might have noticed that Windows assigns a Drive letter to the USB drives connected to the system failing to do so will result in this problem i.e. when Windows fails to assign a new drive letter to Drive connected for the first time can lead to this kind of issues. To fix this issue, follow the simple steps given below

  • Open RUN dialog box using Windows + R and type in compmgmt.msc and hit enter. This will open computer management wizard
  • Next go to Disk Management on the left pane of the opened window
  • To the work space at the right pane, you can see the USB Drive connected to PC simply right click on it and select change drive letter and paths

  • Now, manually assign a new drive letter i.e. drive letter that is not assigned to any other drives, to the inserted USB Drive.

That’s all. You can now open my Computer and there you can see your USB device.
