Removal of Outdated Icons from Windows 7 System Tray

Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system allows you to customize the actions of the system tray or notification area icons. You can organize the icons so as to keep it hidden unless there is notification to display the reason behind this is to prevent the visual clutter on the system tray. But, the difficult is that the Windows explorer keeps a cache of the icons and over time this cache can grow to hundreds of items. The outdated icons on the computer system tray can be removed by following the steps given below.

  • Open Start menu
  • Type regedit in the Run dialog box. Make sure that you are logged into the computer as Administrator
  • When the registry editor window opens, Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
  • Select IconStreams and PastIconsStream and delete both of them

  • After deleting them, restart the explorer, or logoff and login again or restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Upon restarting of your computer you can see that all the unnecessary or obsolete icons from the list except the ones already present on the Notification Area. While deleting the entries in the registry editor make sure that you don’t delete any other entries as that can give rise to many errors in the windows. If by any means you have deleted any important entry that prevents the operating system to malfunction, in that case you need to restore your system. So it is necessary to set a restore point before changing any settings or entries on the computer.

There is an alternate way to clean the obsolete icon from notification area that is by using the Notification Area Cleaner for Windows 7.
