How to Add Desktop icon on Windows 7 Taskbar?

Desktop icon from the Windows 7 is been missing from the taskbar. There are many users who still miss the desktop icon on Windows 7 can get back the icon. Steps to show desktop icon in Windows 7

To show desktop icon back in Windows 7, simply follow the steps described below.

  • Open notepad and copy the following

Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

  • Next, save the notepad file and name it as Show desktop.scf on your desktop.
  • Go to drive where your OS is installed, let’s say it is installed on C Drive, cut-paste the desktop.scf file in folder:
    C:\User\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\Taskbar
  • Now, in order to open the folder, simply copy paste this address in the explorer address bar and press Enter
  • Next, you need to create any temporary shortcut of any of your other (.exe) applications on your desktop and Rename it to Show Desktop.
  • Right click on it and Change its icon.
  • Select the Show Desktop icon from the following folder C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
  • Click Apply/ OK.
  • Right click on the folder and Pin to Taskbar
  • Again, right click on the temporary desktop icon and go to its Properties
  • Under Shortcut tab, change its Target to C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar\Show desktop.scf

Once you have completed all the steps, you can see the Show desktop icon in the Windows 7 desktop in the location it should be and with same look & behavior. Simply drag and drop the folder to the desired position.

Alternatively, you use the freeware named Show Desktop Button App for Windows 7, this will enable the same feature and allows you to pin it to Windows 7 taskbar. This free App minimizes all opened windows to display the desktop.
