Disable/Hide/Remove Windows 7 shutdown options from Start menu

If you have a multiple users for your computer, there may arise situation where you don’t want the other user to be able to do a Shutdown or Restart. Most of times when you or any other user install software on your Windows 7 system, PC asks to do a restart to complete the installation of the software, if the software is a malicious one then it may risk the security of your computer. Here is the tutorial how you can hide or disable the Shutdown Options from the Windows Start Menu.

If your computer is a shared one and sometimes you don’t want the users to perform a Shutdown or Restart. Here is how you can remove or hide shutdown or restart options from the Start Menu using the two procedures discussed here.

Disable/Hide/Remove Shutdown, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate Buttons from Windows 7 Start Menu

Hide/Disable Shutdown Options in Start Menu Using Local Group Policy Editor

Follow the steps below to disable the shutdown options in Windows 7 start menu.

  • Go to Start orb and type gpedit.msc in the search box and hit Enter
  • You will now see Windows Local Group Policy Editor in the screen. Now, navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar
  • In the right pane find Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands and double click on it

  • Another windows pops out, click on enabled to enable the setting

  • Click Apply and Ok.

Now return to the Power options in the Start Menu, you will only find options like are Log off, Switch user, and Lock.
To add the shutdown options back in the start menu, follow the same steps and click on disabled in the settings window. You can also try Ctrl+Alt+Del, you will find that it won’t turn off the computer as it used to be.

Hide/Disable Shutdown Options in Start Menu Using Windows Registry Editor

Follow the steps below to disable or hide the shutdown options from Windows 7 start menu, but as the process deals with registry you need to set a restore point before moving on to the procedure.

  • Click on Start orb and open Run box or press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box
  • Now, type regedit and hit OK. This will open Windows registry
  • Next, navigate to the following location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  • In the right pane, right click on a blank space and select New > DWORD (32 bit) Value

  • Name the new DWORD with REMOVE RESTART or NoClose or anything u like
  • Now, double click on it and assign the Hexadecimal value to 1, then click OK

  • Lastly, close the registry and if prompted for a restart, do so, to apply the changes.

Now, go to start menu and there you will notice only the Log off, Switch user, and Lock options in the shut down options.

You can again add or enable the Shutdown button in the start menu by following the same steps discussed above and assign 0 to Value data back.

Upon following the procedures described above you can disable or hide the shutdown options from the start menu in Windows 7 Computer.
