Customize Windows 7 with Windows 8 Themes

Have you ever tried installing Windows 8 themes in Windows 7? This simply won’t happen as Windows 8 theme is not supported by Windows 7 or say are not compatible. But The Windows 7 themes work well in Windows 8. If you are a Windows 7 user and want to use the Windows 8 themes on your system, then here is the tutorial how you can achieve this.

Windows 8 themes are created with .deskthemepack extension whereas Windows 7 themes are with .themepack extension. Even if you try renaming the .deskthemepack extension to .themepack. you won’t be able install those themes on your Windows 7 computer.

How to install and use Windows 8 themes in Windows 7?

A themes pack generally includes desktop backgrounds, sound schemes, icons, and screen savers. To install the Windows 8 themes on your Windows 7 system, follow the instructions given below and use all those beautiful desktop backgrounds and sound schemes in your Windows 7.

  • Firstly, you need to Download Windows 8 theme from the Windows Personalization gallery
  • Next, you need to download and install another freeware named 7-Zip
  • Now, right-click on the Windows 8 theme file and select 7-Zip and Extract Files option. Extract the contents of the theme file on desktop in to a New Folder. You should now get a .theme file and also a folder named DesktopBackground. This folder contains all desktop backgrounds included in the .deskthemepack file

  • Try to open the folder, select the image right-click on it and then select Set as desktop background. But if you want to create your Windows 7 theme using all extracted pictures from Windows 8 theme, then follow the two steps below.
  • Go to Windows desktop, right-click and select Personalize option from the context menu. On the Personalization window, click on Desktop Background and then click on Picture location browse button to browse to the DesktopBackground folder that was obtained after extracting Windows 8 theme file

  • Now, click save changes button to effect the changes. Again get back to Personalization window and click on Window Color and set your own Window color and again click on Save Changes button to save the new Window color

  • At last, click on the newly created theme file and pick the Save theme for sharing option. Assign a name for the newly created theme to save your theme. This will save the theme in .themepack extension, which can be used on both Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.
