How to disable Anti-virus on your PC?

Anti-virus programs are used to prevent the entry of virus in your PC. It also prevents you from downloading different Malware effected programs by flashing a message on the screen. But, sometimes it is needed to be disabled while running certain programs, as they can interfere in between the program execution and specially when PC is affected by Malware. Disabling procedures for different Anti-virus program are illustrated below.

Follow the steps to disable the particular Antivirus that is installed in the system.

For AVAST Antivirus


  •  Locate the “Avast” icon in system tray on the bottom right hand corner and right click on it
  • Select avast shields control and there will be options to disable avast for 10 minutes, 1 hour, or until the computer is restarted or permanently, or, simply right click on the “avast” icon in system tray and choose “Stop On-Access Protection”.

 For AVG 8 Antivirus

  • Right click on the “AVG 8” icon on task bar to open the “AVG 8 Control Center”
  • Click on “Tools” under control center and select “Advanced”
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to “Resident Shield”
  • In the main pane, deselect the option to “Enable Resident Shield.”
  • In order to re-enable AVG 8, select “Enable Resident Shield” again.

For AVG 8.5 Antivirus


  • Open the AVG 8.5 Control Center, by right clicking on the “AVG icon” on task bar
  • Click on Open AVG Interface
  • Double click on Resident Shield
  • Deselect the option to “Enable Resident Shield” and save changes, and then exit the application
  • In order to re-enable AVG 8.5, select “Enable Resident Shield” again.

 For AVG 2011

  • Right click on the AVG icon on task bar to open AVG 2011 Control Center
  • Click on Open AVG User Interface
  • On the Menu Bar, click on Tools, then click Advanced Settings
  • On clicking Advanced setting a screen pops out, scroll down to Temporarily disable AVG protection option
  • Click on it to highlight and in the right hand pane, check the box for Temporarily disable AVG protection and click Apply
  • Another screen pops out and select for how much time you need to disable the Anti-virus, then click the Disable real time protection button and click OK
  • To re-enable, just check Enable on the main GUI interface.

 For AVIRA Antivirus


Look for Avira icon which is an open white umbrella on red background right on the system tray located at the bottom right corner and click it and untick the option AntiVir Guard enable. You can now see a closed, white umbrella on a red background which symbolises Avira is been disabled.

For BitDefender Antivirus


  • Double click on the system Bit Defender icon
  • When the Bit Defender window appears, move mouse arrow to the left side and click on Virus Shield
  • Move mouse arrow to the black check by Virus Shield is enabled and click
  • The black works will change to red, indicating Virus Shield is disabled
  • Move mouse arrow to the top right corner and click the down arrows. Bit Defender is now inactive
  • To enable Bit Defender, repeat the same steps except click to enable.

For CA Internet Security Suite 2010

  • To turn off the Firewall, right click on the CA Shield icon in the system tray, go to My Internet, then click Disable Firewall. To turn on, right click system tray icon, click My Internet, then click Enable Firewall
  • To disable the Antivirus temporarily, right click the CA Shield icon in the system tray, click My Computer, then click Enable Snooze
  • Enter the snooze time in minutes in the box and click Snooze
  • To end snooze, follow the same procedure and click Wake Now on the page for entering snooze time
  • To disable Antivirus on a longer basis, double-click the CA Shield icon in the system tray
  • When Security Center comes up, click Update Settings in the My Computer tab
  • Then click the (close) red X next to Auto Scan
  • To re-enable, follow the same procedure and click the green check mark.


For ESET NOD32 Antivirus V4

  • 1. Double click on the ESET NOD32 icon present in system tray on the bottom right hand corner
  • 2. Select Disable real-time file system protection. Click “Yes” to disable the Antivirus guard.

For ESET Smart Security

  • Double click on the system tray icon to open the main application window of ESET Smart Security. Alternatively, it can be done by clicking on Start then go to all Programs then to ESET and ESET Smart Security
  • Click on Setup, then click on Antivirus and antispyware and temporarily disable Antivirus and antispyware protection.
  • Confirm temporary disable by selecting Yes.

For F-SECURE Antivirus

  • Navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for F-SECURE icon which is a blue sign
  • Right click it and select Unload. The F-Secure sign should now be surrounded by a red strike through circle.

For Kaspersky Antivirus


  • Go to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a icon of KASPER-SKY
  • Right click it and select Pause Protection. A message appears claiming the disabling of the program.

For Microsoft Security Essentials


  • Open MSE and go to Settings then to Real Time Protection
  • Then uncheck “Turn on real time protection” and exit MSE when done.

For MCAFEE Antivirus


  • Navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for MCAFEE icon, right click it and select “Exit.”

For MCAFEE Security Center 7.1

  • Navigate to system tray and double click the task bar icon to open Security Center panel
  • Click Advanced Menu at the bottom mid left
  • Click to Configure at the left
  • Click Computer & Files at the top left
  • Virus Scan can be disabled in the right-hand module and set when it should resume or you can do that manually later on.

For NORTON 360norton

  • Navigate to the system tray and right click the Norton 360 icon to open Tasks and settings Window
  • On the right side, under Settings, click on Change advanced settings
  • Next, click on the Virus & Spyware Protection Settings
  • Uncheck Turn on Auto-Protect and select Apply
  • Choose the time of resume back the program
  • Re-enable after the Malware has been removed from your computer.

After the Malware has been removed, you can enable or resume or reactivate the Anti-virus program.
