How to Boot into the Safe Mode in Windows XP, 7 and Windows 8?

Safe mode is a mode in Windows OS that allows a minimum of drivers and Windows components to function. This mode is helpful in diagnosing errors and also help to get rid of them by troubleshooting them. But, many users don,t know how to boot into the safe mode in Windows. Here is the tutorial how to boot into the Windows safe mode.

Safe mode is very useful in resolving many errors on your computer. The most common way to boot into Windows Safe mode is with the F8 key on the keyboard. Almost every Windows versions can be booted into Safe Mode by this method.

Follow the steps to get into Windows Safe mode

  • Turn on or restart your computer
  • Press F8 key before the Windows logo appears. If the computer makes any kind of complaining noise, then tap the F8 key repeatedly instead of holding it down
  • Once you are done with all the steps, a menu will appear with a number of boot options. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to Safe Mode and hit the Enter key.

You can also get to Safe Mode without using the F8 key that is by using the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).

  • Open the Start menu and click Run
  • In the Run dialog box, enter msconfig and click OK
  • Select the tab BOOT.INI
  • Put a check by the entry /SAFEBOOT. Also click the radio button MINIMAL
  • Click Apply and then hit OK
  • Now, Restart your computer, you will open in Safe Mode.

  • Open the Start menu
  • Enter msconfig in the search box or RUN dialog box
  • Click the entry msconfig or msconfig.exe shown in the programs list
  • Select the Boot tab
  • Under the Boot options section, check Safe boot. Also, make sure the radio button Minimal is selected
  • Click OK
  • Restart the computer

Select the type of Safe Mode in which you want to boot into and which is the better mode. You can see the following options when you get to the system configuration window.

Minimal is normal safe mode.
Alternate Shell is safe mode with command prompt
Network is safe mode with networking.

The Active Directory option restores a server that is a Domain Controller for your network. Once you have chosen your option click the ok button and restart your system to open in that specific mode.

Once you have completed your work in the safe mode, go back to msconfig and uncheck by Safe boot that was applied before to get back to the normal start-up.

Upon following the steps above you can now easily get to the safe mode and finish all your work and then return back to the normal mode upon setting up all the issues on your computer.
