Effects of Deleting Windows System32 folder

The Windows System32 folder of a computer directory accumulates Windows operating system’s core system files. If by any chance you have deleted the  system32 folder, then several Windows services would fail, and the operating system itself would become unstable. System32 is a directory that contains the core drivers and system files of Windows operating system. Go to Start > My Computer > Windows > System32 i.e. C:\WINDOWS\system32.  System32 folder contains several dynamic link library files (DLLs). These DLLs drive controls the functions like memory management, mouse pointer control, interpreting keyboard key strokes, managing USB ports and managing the Windows interface.  Windows boot files are also contained in the System32 folder. When you start your computer, the program for the boot process, BIOS, etc. are the responsibility of system32.

System32 contains DLLs, drivers and stand-alone applications for controlling the various actions on the memory management, interpreting keyboard strokes, etc. A driver is a program that facilitates communications between operating system and the piece of hardware, such as a network card. Computer is loaded with number of drivers in the System32 folder, and each driver or files located in the system32 has its own specific functionality and can be needed any time for the proper functioning of the desktop. Stand-alone programs that are available on your system32 folder include ipconfig.exe, cmd.exe and ping.exe. Cmd.exe is the command line shell that you can use to enter text commands into your computer. Ipconfig.exe and ping.exe are applications that you can use to configure, test and find your Internet connection.

If by any means you have deleted system32 from Windows Explorer, a devastating effect will occur on the operating system and will make the OS unstable and you will most likely receive an error message from Windows stating that you do not have the required permissions. Other methods for deleting the existing folder, such as creating a .bat file with Notepad that essentially forces Windows to delete it. However, such methods are typically pushed on unsuspecting computer users who are unaware of the hazarding effect that can be caused on the computers.

If you have deleted the system32 directory, then your computer is most likely prone to crash in an abrupt manner, or it will work very sluggishly until your next reboot. The symptoms after deletion depends upon the version of Windows installed on your system. In either case, you will not be able to boot into Windows again. Without system32, Windows is not able to function. To restore functionality, you would have to use system repair with the Windows installation CD. This process would reinstall system32 to its proper place in the Windows folder.

System32 directory plays a vital role in operating and controlling the desktop. Various functionality depends on the files stored in the system32. Microsoft strongly advices against modifying or deleting any of the contents within the System32 folder.
