Display and Manage Super-Hidden Windows System Files

Windows 7 are loaded with many feature that is kept hidden for the betterment of the OS. Hidden Files are one of the integral part of every operating system. In Windows 7 based systems, hidden files can generally be viewed from a folder by enabling the Show Hidden files option. Not all the files are displayed in Windows Explorer even upon enabling Show hidden files in folder options. However, there are certain hidden files marked as Super Hidden Files that cannot be viewed by this process in platforms based on Windows 7. Follow the tutorial to view the Super hidden file.

Some files in Windows are given the attribute of hidden and do not normally show up in Windows Explorer. To view the Super Hidden Files on Windows 7, you have to edit the registry (Registry Editor) and access Advanced Explorer settings.

  • To display these super hidden files follow the steps laid below.
  • Go to Start > Select Run > Type regedit to open the registry.
  • Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

  • In the right pane, double-click on ” ShowSuperHidden” and set its value to 1.

Upon completion close the registry editor and restart your PC.

Generally, it is better to leave these system files invisible but sometimes an experienced PC user may wish to see these files. One example is when disk space is tight and you wish to see how much space is being used by certain system files like hiberfil.sys, etc. Another example would be if you wish to look at the contents of one of the many desktop.ini files.

It is quite easy to view a list of super-hidden files with a simple command line operation using the switch /as. For example, if you want to list the super-hidden files on the C: drive, open the command prompt and enter dir C:\ /as

To see the contents in the Windows folder, enter dir %windir% /as

The command as given does not list subdirectories. That would be a very long list but if you really wanted to, you could add the switch /s.

Manage super-hidden files in Windows Explorer

If you are an experienced PC user and want to manage the super-hidden files in Explorer. For Windows Vista/7 OS, the the procedure is given below.

  • Open Computer or any folder
  • Open the Organize drop-down menu
  • Click Folder and search options
  • Click the View tab
  • Scroll down the Advanced Settings list and remove the check by “

  • Say “Yes” to the warning message
  • Click “OK.”

It is probably best to make this setting change temporary and to restore the check as soon as you have finished with your file tasks. Upon following the above mentioned procedures you can now easily view and manage the Super Hidden Windows System files.
