How to View Programs or Apps that runs off-screen?

While running a program or app have you ever noticed that there are some programs that are running off-screen and are not visible on the desktop. Such kinds of programs are only visible in the Windows task manager. They are not visible either due to some default settings or mis-configuration. You can make the programs visible by following this tutorial.

display off-screen or hidden programs

Due to some unknown changes or mis-configuration can make the programs run off-screen. Connecting with multiple monitors or variation of screen resolutions can disappear a program from the desktop. In Windows XP, right-clicking on a window’s Taskbar icon opened a menu that you could use to move it back. However, this is not the case with Windows 7 OS. Right-clicking on these Taskbar icons do not pull up such menus. Follow the steps to display the hidden programs or apps that are running off-screen.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager or right-click on an empty area of the Windows 7 Taskbar and Select Start Task Manager
  • Click on an icon in the Taskbar that represents a hidden window or application
  • Press Alt + Space, then M.
  • Press and hold down the left cursor key for a few seconds. Try the up cursor key. This should move the window back to a visible position on your Windows XP Desktop.

Restore the Hidden or off-screen Window

If on right-clicking the Taskbar icon doesn’t bring up a Restore or Maximize menu item, then you can do it alternatively by right-clicking on the thumbnail preview on an icon.

  • Hover over an icon to display its preview
  • Right-click the preview
  • Select Restore or Maximize from the pop-up menu that appears.
  • By this you can make the restore or maximize an icon.

Move the Off-screen window

  • Click the Taskbar icon.
  • Hover over the icon to display its preview
  • Right-click the preview
  • Select Move from the pop-up menu that appears
  • To move the window back to the displayable area, follow the steps that are described above.

Keyboard Shortcut keys on Windows 7

Windows 7 allows you to maximize and minimize windows via keyboard shortcuts.

Click the Taskbar icon representing the hidden window. Then press Windows + Left-Cursor or Windows + Right-Cursor a few times, and the hidden program window should reappear on the Desktop.

Upon following the above steps you can easily make the programs and apps that are running off-screen visible on the desktop.
