Prevent Accidental Deletion of Files in Window

Many important data files are stored on your computer whose loss cannot be afforded by you. Better protection to your files can be done in an NTFS partition by setting appropriate access permission to that file or folder. The NTFS (New Technology File System) gives permission to you only to access and make any changes. It gives you the full control on a folder and can delete any files in that folder regardless of the permissions that protect the file. In order to provide complete protection to your files, it is important to deny Full Control on that folder. Once that permission is rejected, all important files within that folder are automatically protected from deletion and you are free from setting permission for each individual file.
To protect all files within a folder, follow the steps described below.

  • Build a folder on the root of an NTFS formatted hard drive partition. If the folder that is to be protected from accidental deletion already exists and has nested several other folders, it is recommended to move this folder to the root of the partition.
  • Right-click on the folder and choose Properties.
  • Click on the Security tab and then click Advanced.
  • Select Change Permission, and highlight Administrator in the following window and click Edit
  • Under Permission settings, check the boxes Delete subfolders and files and Delete under the Deny column
  • Close all the opened windows by clicking OK.

Upon completion of the above steps the folder will be protected. Under this folder you can create new files or edit existing files but deletion or rename is prohibited. If you try deleting them it gives a message Access Denied.

The process discussed above is not good enough as the user who have full access to the parent folder can delete files in spite of the permissions that protect the file. If the parent folder is set to Full Access the user will be able to delete the file even if you have denied Delete access to a file. To overcome this, follow the steps laid below to prevent deletion by the user having full access to the folder.

  • Right-click on the file, which is to be protected and choose Properties
    Check the attribute Read-only and click Apply
  • Click and open the Security tab and click Edit
  • Highlight the user name Administrator and check the box Write under the column Deny
  • Click OK to close all the windows.

Upon done with the above mentioned steps, the file are protected from getting deleted, but it has a consequence that the files that are protected cannot be edited or modified.

Another alternate way to protect the files from getting deleted is by using System Protect. It is a freeware that prevents deletion of important system files as well as user-selected files on the hard disk. This program runs in background and tracks all the access to the protected files on your computer. Attempting to delete the files you are alerted. It can be configured to automatically deny all delete attempts or ask the user for action. In addition, System Protect allows files and folders to be password protected.
