How to Set videos as your Windows Desktop wallpaper?

Can you set videos as your Desktop wallpaper? Many users out there are still unaware of the fact that videos can also be set as your Desktop Wallpaper. Sometimes you might get bored with the static desktop wallpapers, but not anymore. You can turn your boring desktop appearance to more entertaining display. You can replace the still desktop wallpapers with videos. You all might be aware of the VLC media player, the most commonly used media player. You can use the VLC videos as your desktop wallpaper.

To make the desktop wallpaper entertaining, you can put videos and movies as your desktop wallpaper by using the hidden features of VLC media players. Many VLC features are not known to users among them, one is used to set videos as desktop background wallpaper. To achieve this perform the following steps.

  • Open VLC media player in your computer
  • Navigate to the top menu bar and select Tools > Preferences > Video
  • In the video window, change the output drop-down from Default to DirectX (DirectDraw) video output

  • Press Save button and also make sure that you have DirectX installed in your computer
  • Now, close VLC player and again run it
  • Play any video that you want to keep it as your desktop wallpaper
  • Then right-click on video screen and select Video > Set as Wallpaper

Upon completion of the above steps you will see that your video has become your desktop wallpaper. It is similar to the normal wallpaper, but this won’t be a still one rather a moving one. However, if you refresh the screen by right-clicking your mouse, then the video disappears and you are left back with your original wallpaper. After you have set the video output to DirectX and restart VLC Player you will see if you are Windows Vista or 7 user, then Aero feature will get disable temporarily till VLC is running in DirectX output mode.

You can directly set video as wallpaper without changing the video output, but the desktop icons goes invisible and when you right-click on it, instead of showing default right-click context menu it will show right-click menu of VLC Media Player. Basically this means that your VLC media player will get into full screen mode with your taskbar on top.
